Reading & Understanding a Top Down Triangular & Half Hexagon Shawl Pattern

From time to time I get questions about how to read a pattern for a top down triangular or half hexagon shawl (or a hybrid between the two like Ivy below). I used to get questions about this construction all the time, but I changed the way I write my patterns a few years ago but I still get a few questions. If you're new to this type of shawls it can be confusing.

In this video I explain how I write my patterns and why and then take you through step by step how to knit the start of Carmen - a triangular shawl - and Ivy - a half hexagon hybrid shawl.
