Mini Tip Tutorial - Circular Cast Ons

The centre of Pandora which is a circular shawl knitted from the centre out.

Circular cast ons are used to start a shawl, blanket or table cloth which is knitted in the round from the centre out. It can be a shape that's square, circular or hexagon. You can also use a circular cast on for circular/swirly toes on toe up socks.

In this blog I'm going to share two tutorials for popular circular cast ons - the Disappearing Loop Cast On and Emily Ocker's Circular Cast On. They're very similar but the Disappearing Loop Cast On uses knitting needles and the Emily Ocker cast on uses a crochet hook which may be difficult if you're not used to using a crochet hook.

Both cast ons can be fiddly when you first do them, mainly because you have so few stitche but it does get easier with practice. In these two tutorials I show you how to work the cast on and how to work the first few rounds. In the Disappearing Loop Cast On I show you how to work the cast on using double pointed needle and the magic loop technique.

In the tutorials I mention my book, Beaded Lace Knitting which has three shawls using these cast on methods - you can purchase your signed copy of Beaded Lace Knitting here.
