In February Vanessa asked me to knit her a hat to match a scarf she had and she told me she wanted a chunky hat. I must admit knitting with chunky yarn is not my favourite. I was teaching at Wool On The Exe a few days later and picked out three yarn combinations: one set of luxury wool/silk blend 4ply yarns, one set of wool dk yarn and one set of wool chunky yarn.

Want to guess which was my preferred option? Vanessa chose the chunky set (hint: this was not my preferred choice). The advantage of chunky yarn is that it's quick to knit. Even with the long rib so it could be folded over, this hat took only an evening to knit.

Then Simon asked me to knit him a hat too. So I used the same pattern but added four rounds to the rib for him and used fewer colours. I used up the grey yarn from Vanessa's hat and bought a ball of blue. I used 90g so you can easily get a hat out of one ball rather than using three like I did for Vanessa.

I hope you will join me in this fun, informal mystery knitalong. I’m designing this shawl as I share it with you to show you a glimpse into my design process. Because of this, the pattern has not been tech edited or test knitted. If you think there are mistakes please leave a comment in my Facebook Group - Love of Lace Knitting or e-mail me on yarnaddictcs@gmail.com.

I have only planned out the beginning of this shawl so I don’t know exactly where we’ll end up. I will keep a step ahead of you so the clues I’m sharing will have been knitted by me before I share them with you. We’re in the middle of a global pandemic and many of us are isolating ourselves in our homes. My family are all working from home so I will film tutorials and information for each clue as I’m able.

I recommend you have between 600-900m (656-984yds) of sock/4ply/fingering weight yarn. It can all be one colour or several different colours. I’m using three colours. I'm not sure whether I should be carrying on as normal or go into full panic mode. I'm sure many of you feel the same. I'm trying to not worry about the things I can't control which I'm normally pretty good at but it's a struggle these days. I'm sure many of you are in the same situation.

Here in the UK, we've been told to self-isolate as much as possible but we're not in full lock down like some other countries. Shops, restaurants, coffee shops, pubs, gyms, hair & beauty salons etc are all still open but we've been told not to visit them unless it's essential. Schools are closing tomorrow and many businesses are telling their staff to work from home.

Yarn shows are being cancelled. The two I was attending that have been cancelled so far is Wonderwool Wales and Cornish Fibre Festival. I've only had one workshop cancelled so far but I'm sure more will be cancelled soon. I think yarn shops are waiting till the last minute to make a decision. This period we're facing worldwide will be very hard for small independent businesses like yarn shops, indie dyers, knitting and crochet designers. A big chunk of my income comes from shows and workshops so my income will be drastically reduced over the coming weeks (or possibly months).

I'm making some plans to move some stuff online. I will start filming online workshops next week but it's time consuming to create the content, film and edit the videos and create the online courses but I'll have more time if I'm staying home all the time. So if there's a workshop you'd like to do, let me know by clicking reply to this e-mail or telling me on social media. I'm also planning some free content for you.

In my Love of Lace Knitting Facebook Group I'm planning to host a mystery knitalong starting next week. I'm still working on the details but I will design the pattern, knit it and share the process with you and you can knit along with me. I will probably do live streams in the Facbook Group which I will save and then share on You Tube for those of you not on Facebook. I may also pre-record some videos.

An e-mail has been sent out to my Newsletter List with a coupon code for a free pattern (if you missed it or haven't signed up yet, the code will be in next week's newsletter too - Sign up to the newsletter here).
So you can get two free patterns if you're a member of the group or join the group.

The coming weeks will be hard for many of us. Many people, myself included, will have our income reduced drastically. So if you're able to, please support your favourite indie businesses.

<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">Charts are read from bottom to the top, so round 1 in at the bottom of the chart.

<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">When you knit in the round, all rounds are read from right to left (so all round numbers are on the right hand side of the chart).

<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">Each square is a stitch.

<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">Check the chart key for the meaning of each symbol. On these charts, you only have to worry about which colour to knit each stitch in and where to add the beads (B on the chart).

You can of course use other fibres. Just look for a yarn that has approx 420m per 100g skein. I didn't use the full amounts of the lilac and green colours. I used the following amounts of each colour: C1 - Silver - 90g used, C2 - Lilac - 70g used & C3 - Olive - 55g used. In total I used approx 903m. If you prefer you can use two colours. Lace patterns are a little bit different because of the yarn overs (yarn forward, yarn over the needle, yarn round the needle) which are increases and decreases.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In lace patterns each yarn over has a corresponding decrease. Sometimes this decrease is right next to the yarn over and sometimes it's several stitches away or on a later row. If the yarn over is further away from the decrease it makes working out how to keep the pattern correct more difficult.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In this tutorial I've used a very simple lace pattern. It is much easier to work out how to keep the pattern correct if you can read charts because you have a visual representation of what your knitting looks like and you can expand the pattern repeat which is what I've done in the charts below. The easiest way to do this is to get some squared paper and copy the lace pattern on the squared paper and then expand it horizontally.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In the example below, the yarn overs and decreases are not symmetrical. As you can see the decreases are at the beginning of rows 1 and 3 and the yarn overs are afterwards. So you have two decreases followed by two increases (yarn overs). This is more difficult to deal with when it comes to keeping the pattern correct while shaping. In this example I would take away a complete repeat at the beginning and end of the row. Use markers to section off where you'll be working the repeat and where you'll be working in stocking stitch.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The shawl is made from two 100g balls (I used 175g in total) but it can easily be made smaller or larger. In this video I explain how to make it smaller or larger.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Before you start, weigh your yarn. The shawl consists of an increase section (Charts A and B -I'm referring to Charts but the pattern has charts and written instructions), a straight section (Chart C) and a decrease section (Charts B and D).
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">For the increase section of the shawl (Chart A) you'll be increasing at the edge of the shawl (for the lace border) and in the garter stitch section for the body of the shawl. Once you reach the full width of the lace border, you will continue to increase inside the lace border until you reach the full depth of the shawl. If you want to make the shawl smaller work fewer repeats of Chart B and if you want to make it bigger, work more repeats of Chart B.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Once you've finished increasing, weigh your yarn and make a note of how much you've used.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Then work Chart C which is the lace across the middle of the shawl. Chart C includes both the garter stitch chevron lace across the body of the shawl and the lace border (previously Charts A and B). To make Chart C work, you will need a total stitch count of (12) + 25. I had 121 stitches which is eight 12 stitch repeats plus 25 stitches. Deduct 12 stitches from or add 12 stitches to 121 to work out how many stitches will work with Chart C.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Weigh your yarn every time you've worked a 24 row repeat of Chart C and start decreasing when you have the same amount of yarn left as you used for the increase section. I recommend you add a little bit extra, just in case.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">For the final section, decrease inside the lace border (Chart B) and then decrease the lace border too (Chart D).
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">These instructions will probably make more sense if you already have the pattern to refer to. You can also use these instructions if you want to knit the shawl in a thicker or thinner yarn. Use a needle size that gives you the drape you want. Then use the instructions above to work out how to maximise your yarn amount.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I'm really excited to announce a project I've been working on for a while now. For the last few years I've been obsessed with knitting socks with an afterthought heel and I've decided to share it with you.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Aventuras (Spanish for adventure) is a choose your own adventure sock pattern. Choose from 16 different combinations: toe up, cuff down, two different toes, two different afterthought heels and two stitch patterns.

I love knitting socks with an afterthought heel mainly because it doesn't disrupt the stripe pattern if you're using self-striping sock yarn<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> (which I use a lot!) but it's also good if you're using any other type of sock yarn. Whether you're knitting from the cuff down or toe up, an afterthought heel doesn't disrupt the flow of your sock knitting. You knit in a waste yarn, then carry on knitting. Once you've finished the sock, you go back and undo the waste yarn and knit your chosen heel.
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The waste yarn for the afterthought heel has been undone.

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In this pattern I'm giving two options for heels and toes. Both options are rarely used in socks, the wedge toe and heel. I think the wedge heel/toe the way I shape it, may be my invention as I've never seen it anywhere else. The other option is a swirly toe and heel which I love the look of.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

There's been a discussion lately about the lack of larger, middleaged or older models in the knitting industry. I'll be 50 later this summer and I'm overweight, actually I'm obese. Even after loosing 33 pounds in the last 18 months I'm still obese. But if I'm being objective I think I look good.... or at least OK. But that hyper critical inner voice won't shut up! I'm uber-critical when I look at photos of me in new designs. I don't notice how the design looks on me but if I look fat. Or slimmer. Is my double chin showing. And ironically, since I've lost weight I've noticed more wrinkles too.
Trenance - one of the photos I wasn't happy with.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I've just released the Trenance sweater pattern, and to be honest I've been delaying publishing it because I don't like how I look in the photos. Please understand I'm not saying this to get lots of compliments and reassurances. I'm just being honest about how I feel.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I don't airbrush my photos. I may edit them to lighten or brighten them and I think Vanessa's camera may automatically apply a filter but I don't add any filters afterwards.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It makes me annoyed with myself that I worry about how I look in photos but I think it's human. I think most of us probably worry about how we look. If someone wants to take a photo of my while I'm teaching I make sure I stand or sit up straight, pull my tummy in, lift my chin. At the age of 50 I should be comfortable with how I look.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">But I'm confronting my insecurity and as Emily is home for the summer it's tempting to get her to model for me (and I may make her model the odd thing) but I will push myself and continue to model my own designs.
As it was recorded Live it's a bit rough and not as polished as I'd like it to be but you can see how I block the sweater which is the main thing.
I was too when I first got into sock knitting. It wasn't really until I started teaching sock knitting that I became comfortable with it. Since then I've grafted more socks than I can remember and I promise you, practice makes perfect! Below is my Grafting/Kitchener Stitch tutorial.
